The Staple -- A Denim Dilemma

By Mira Lotfallah

A girl depends on her staples. Whether it’s her staple feel good outfit, her staple cocktail, or her staple Sunday brunch spot, they’re the constants that she can turn to without a second thought. In an ever changing world, she comes to live by these things that will never let her down. In the fickle world of fashion, where in the blink of an eye hemlines raise from ankle grazing to thigh high, empire waists make way for low slung belts, and we alternately reveal and conceal with tight and form-fitting or loose and flowing, there remains one of the few prodigies of the design world that we can always count on, jeans. From a simple utilitarian beginning, jeans have gone beyond function to high fashion and become a status symbol and one of our favorite staples.

Borne of humble beginnings, the jean has been catapulted to superstardom in a relatively short amount of time, and we’ve seen some rather disastrous perversions in an attempt to take it to new heights. Which begs the question, if it has made it this far, what’s really so wrong with the basic jean to begin with?

The current trend of the skinny jean, a redesign of the 1950’s slim silhouette, can be sexy, chic or even sweet when worn by the right shape, giving just the right amount of fullness to a boyish figure. While it’s been holding several seasons strong the general opinion seems to be divided based on its restricted wearability, making this revival questionable as a longstanding survivor. The exaggerated abundance they lend determined trend junkies in Ms. Moss denial reminds us to leave some things to the imagination, but on the right figure, one has to admit, they’re just oh-so-right.

We all get nostalgic from time to time, but this is no reason to bring back trends that belong in the hall of shame alongside the flip bang, mullet, and flannel shirts. The newest denim dilemma is posed by the controversial kickback from the 1970’s, the high-waisted jean. When faced with a negotiation over which problem zone we would rather de-emphasize, and even the longest and leanest of limbs rarely achieve sartorial perfection in this design, we should instantly accept that these belong in a category that is best left in the past. Perhaps the worst offender has not been dead long enough for us to remember how truly awful it was – the overall. We all donned them in the ‘90s, forfeiting any semblance of a figure and femininity, and no amount of revamping will make them any more flattering today. Adolescence was difficult enough the first time around, do we really need to revisit it now by way of an unbecoming bib of denim?

In a pinch, a great pair of jeans has indeed become a staple saving grace. Paired with a sexy top, killer heels, and the right bag, and you’re instantly divine. So as we sit by and watch others fall victim to the latest denim disaster, we turn to the things we can count on and remember everything that is so right about the basic jean.

Finding the perfect jeans is like searching for Mr. Right.

by Angelina Ogburn for Designer Jeans for Women

angelina og - designer jeans cheaper than lipo

On average, you’ll date several guys before you settle down with ‘the one.’ Jeans are the same way. Like your partner, they’re not just one-size-fits-all. You can’t expect to waltz up to a strange pair of jeans and expect them to work. Get to know the styles what work for your body.

Step 1: Face the truth. In the real world, women have imperfect bodies. In the real world, models don’t even look like models. And everyone definitely does NOT wear a size two. Keep in mind; you’re a real person. Don’t get discouraged if the first few pairs, or even the first twenty pairs don’t work. The right pair is out there, but it takes work. We have hips, thighs, and tummies, all wonderful characteristics, which make us feminine. Women are supposed to have curves and that aspect makes the female shape beautiful. Famous sculptures have imitated the natural beauty of the female form. Take pride in your body and emphasize your assets.

Step 2: Do your research. You wouldn’t buy a car without doing some research first and the same goes for jeans. Find out what styles and brands work for your body type. Flip through a few fashion magazines or simply go online type in a few key words into the search bar. Within a few seconds the results should reveal several websites to give you a general idea of what to look for while shopping.

Step 3: When you finally get the nerve to go jean shopping, there’re a few general tips to keep in mind. Pay no attention to your ‘regular size.’ Instead focus on the fit. Don’t bash yourself if you have to go up a size or it simply isn’t flattering. No one but you cares what size you wear (except you of course.) Trust me, no one will grab the back of your jeans; flip the waistband and check your size. One common mistake is squeezing into a pair of jeans that are too small. You may soften the blow on your ego, but too small of clothes actually make you appear thicker. Certain brands run larger, smaller, and cater to particular body types. Also, different washes can affect the shrinkage and stretch of the jean style. Honestly, its no small wonder why finding a great pair of jeans is so hard. But be patient, they’re out there.

Designer Jeans for Women: Cheaper than Lipo

by Angelina Ogburn for Designer Jeans for Women

Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like attending aerobics class wearing a thong. At first it’s kinda painful but afterwards you’ll feel thinner. Most women have an average of ten pairs of jeans lying around. Admit it. The majority of your jeans aren’t charming. If you wear “Mom Jeans,” tapered, elastic waist, stonewashed bad 80’s (not to be confused with the Fall’s ‘skinny’ jeans) throw them out. Another deadly jean sin is the low-rise pants that reveal deadly butt/gut cleavage. Public whale tails (thongs) and love handles are not attractive. And to top off the list…do you own anything with elastic waistbands? If so, burn it. Realize that the right pair can make you look ten pounds leaner. Yet, the wrong pair could make you look ten pounds heavier.

The right jeans are like plastic surgery on your thighs. Designer jeans can work miracles on a less than perfect body. How? Depending on your shape, the right pair of jeans can shrink problem areas or boost curves. New styles from (Earnest Sewn, True Religion, Joe’s Jeans, Sacred Blue) kick to the curb the one-size fits all mindset specifically designed to cater to particular body types. Once you find that perfect pair, make sure to buy two. One pair should be hemmed to wear with flats and the other hemmed to be worn with heels.

Simple Guide of Jean Basics

WASH – The color of the jeans.

INSEAM- The length from the inside seam of the pant leg to the crotch hem.

RISE- The distance between the crotch to the waistband.

WHISKERING- Faux distressing that creates a worn, broken in appearance.

Easy Tips to Remember:

  • Pockets placed lower on the behind give you a perkier butt.
  • Avoid low pockets if you’re trying to minimize your butt.
  • Higher detailed pockets add booty curves.
  • Jeans with a dark wash on the thighs that gradually fade from the knee down give the illusion of smaller thighs.
  • Seams that run down the front of the pant leg make legs look longer.
  • Angled pockets minimize hips.

Earnest Sewn announces a new wash in the Harlan tapered leg fit for Holiday 06’

For the Holiday 06 collection, Earnest Sewn introduces a new wash in the ‘Harlan’ fit. This style is the cult denim labels most popular fit. Introduced to the market in Fall 04, the Harlan started a trend that changed the silhouette of denim everywhere, and re-invented the 5-pocket aesthetic for good.

The new Harlan 93 wash, “One Rinse” fulfills the need for a cleaner, darker, more sophisticated option in denim. It is a saturated, rich, dark indigo wash that is put though one rinse to keep the clean appearance of untreated denim, while softening the fabric to maximize comfort.

Earnest Sewn’s Harlan 93 will be available for purchase in fine department stores and select specialty boutiques beginning mid October, 2006.

Earnest Sewn announces two new washes for Holiday 06’ in the Back Zip Cigarette Tapered Leg Fit

For the Holiday 06 collection Earnest Sewn introduces two new washes in the ‘Harlan Back Zip’. This style is a modified version of the cult denim labels most popular fit, The Harlan, which was introduced to the market in Fall 04, and started a trend that changed the silhouette of denim everywhere, and re-invented the 5-pocket aesthetic for good.

The fit, that debuted in Spring 06, has the same sexy low rise as the Harlan, and is made from premium 100% dual ring ring Japanese denim that flatters the form by its extremely high recovery characteristic and firm gripping nature that retains and compliments the wearers shape. This updated version has the unique styling detail of the back zip that allows the fit to go from a skinny silhouette to a slightly boot flare at the leg opening, which gives the wearer the option of opening up the leg to go over a boot.

The Harlan Back Zip Holiday offering includes the ‘Black Metal’ wash, which is a highly unique Japanese stretch denim, with both black warp and weft yarns, that has been treated with multiple processes including resin and oven baking to seal in the 3D wear pattern, and then starched and ironed to reveal a subtle sheen, while keeping the depth of the black base. The new fit is also available in the ‘One Rinse’ finish, a saturated, rich, dark indigo wash that is put though one rinse to keep the clean appearance of untreated denim, while softening the fabric to maximize comfort.

For the Holiday 06 collection Earnest Sewn will introduce a new fit, the ‘Harlan Zip Pocket’. This new Holiday design is the first departure for our skinny fit with updated styling details, including front and back pocket zippers and no patch pockets. Corpus Redefines Denim Jeans for Women

The designer denim label Corpus, from the creative team that first embraced the skinny jean for men, has developed an exciting new women’s jean that redefines the female form in denim.

The Corpus women’s jean is a super-slim fashion fit style that comes in several denim washes as well as in jersey-finish. The denim washes are dark, solid and tonal, while the jersey cigarette leg features a stirrup pant. The skinny cigarette leg jean is the only cut that Corpus is releasing this season, to be followed by an expanded line in the Spring and Summer.

Corpus’s women’s fashion denim jean line has been developed with the same uncompromising attention to detail and cutting-edge design sensibility as their Corpus men’s jeans. Like the men’s line, their women’s jean features both the original scoop pocket with a longer silhouette and a traditional five pocket that is slightly curved with a busted seam at middle. All of our design and production is done in downtown Los Angeles by Corpus designers Jerrod Cornish and Keith Richardson.

CORPUS was launched in 2003 and rebelled against the distressed, pre-faded trend in denim by focusing primarily on raw and indigo rinsed denim. Its founders, Jerrod Cornish and Keith Richardson, shared a mutual frustration at not being able to find clothes with a sophisticated fit or denims that were not destroyed by an obscene wash treatment. Nine painstaking months were spent on development of the perfect fit, color palette and detailing concepts before a single of Corpus’s garments were produced. The result is a collection that reflects the ideas of the young urban and urbane. The overall creative aesthetic is skewed progressive, in a subtle way, lending an eye towards detail and moving away from the classic 5 pocket template. The garments are wearable and slightly more refined than what the common jeans market offers. Corpus’s work is clean, dark and basic, focusing more on what is left off than what is put on. Everything Corpus is created and fabricated in downtown Los Angeles. Superior craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and uncompromising creative vision make Corpus jeans stand apart from the ordinary.

Women’s Denim Guide for Finding the Perfect Pair of Jeans for Your Body Type

Stepping out to shop for a new pair of jeans is exciting for any woman. You leave home picturing a pair that fits you like a glove, playing up your assets and hiding the flaws. But more often than not the shopping excursion turns quickly into a frustrating ordeal as you try one pair after another at dozens of stores and still don’t find one that’s right for your body.

Save yourself the misery by reading the tips offered here before you buy your next pair of jeans. It is important to understand that women have varying body types and what works for your slender and short friend will most definitely not work for a taller and fuller you.

Short figures

If you are short-figured, always look for jeans with a shorter inseam and a higher knee break. The inseam is the pant leg’s length from the crotch to the leg opening at the bottom. The knee break is where the knee ends and the calf begins. A shorter inseam and higher knee break work together to create an illusion of height, making you appear taller than you are.

Tall Figures

Some tall women have long torsos and they should look for jeans with a higher rise. The rise is the length from the waistband to the crotch. A higher waist will make your torso look smaller. Some jeans come with eight-inch rise and are ideal for women of this body type. If your legs are really long, then hunt for jeans with a longer inseam.

Slim, Straight Figures

First of all, you’re really lucky because most jeans out there are best suited for your body type. But be a little discerning and you will end up with jeans that make you look drop dead gorgeous. Make sure you buy a slim fit with a slight stretch. That way there will be no material bunched up or sagging over your backside and you will look shapelier than you are. If you are really slender in the middle, try a pair of jeans with a slight flare at the bottom to balance it out.

Curvy, voluptuous figures

Unfortunately, most run-of-the mill jeans are not suited to your body type and you will have to look for a designer pair if you want a perfect fit. Look for jeans with a stretch so they hug your curves. Also make sure the top is contoured so that there is more room for your hips and behind.

Fuller thigh figures

You too might have to stick to designer jeans because they would ensure the best fit. Straight, relaxed and wide leg jeans are the ones for you because they would give your hips enough room and not draw attention to your thighs. Stay away from styles that become narrower near the leg opening because that would amplify your fuller thighs.

Trends, Terms & Labels – What’s Hot in Women’s Designer Jeans

From humble beginnings as the preferred clothing of American workers, farmers and cowboys because of their comfort and hardiness, denim jeans sure have come a long way. Jeans are now essential items in the wardrobes for all Americans, even those who dictate the trends in fashion.

Denim was invented in France and started growing in popularity across Europe and America from the 18 th century. The first pair of jeans as we know it today was born in the US in the 19 th century and developed mass appeal in the latter half of the 20 th century. This was the period when women also took to wearing jeans.

While jeans manufacturers are a dime a dozen today, there are some specialized producers that make designer jeans. What sets designer jeans apart is the perfect fit they provide various body types and the attention to detail.

Trends

While jeans have remained a favorite garment around the world for the past four decades, trends keep changing. The current bestsellers include low-rise jeans that have a low waistband and vintage jeans that are treated to make the denim look aged and worn. Other favorites include straight-cut jeans, boot cut jeans (where the leg opens out towards the bottom to accommodate boots) and flares (which are slim through the leg but widen dramatically above the ankles). Dark denim and embellished jeans are also popular.

Terms

If jeans are your passion, the following terms will hone your ability to spot differences and instantly recognize a pair that’s perfect for you. When trying out jeans, you need to be aware of the: rise (length from top of waistband to crotch), inseam (length from crotch to leg opening) and knee break (where shaping for knee ends and calf begins).

The cuts are easy to identify. A straight cut has no contouring. A boot cut has the pant leg opening out just above the ankle to make room for boots. Flares remain slim through the leg but widen radically from just above the ankle. Peg legs, which were extremely popular in the 1980s but are virtual fashion outcasts now, have extremely narrow leg openings. Bellbottoms start widening below the knee and keep broadening till the bottom of the pant leg.

Recognizing denim is a little trickier, but this should help you get started. While right-hand twill is a more uniform and rigid material, left-hand twill runs diagonally and results in a softer fabric. Open-end denim, the most popular form in use, is yarn of consistent thickness. Dirty denim has brown ‘filler’ yarn that gives the fabric a grimy appearance. Stonewash is the technique used to make the jeans look worn.

The Latest in Designer Jeans: Trends & Reviews

Jeans live on forever, but trends change. Preference for the fit, the cut and the treatment of denim fluctuates from year to year even though the garment itself remains a hot favorite around the world.

The current trend favors a lower waist and leaner fit. But within this too there are many variations. Here is a guide to help you keep the latest trends in designer jeans in mind when you go shopping for new denims.

Low-rise Jeans

Jeans are now preferred low at the waist in sharp contrast to the high-waist style that was in vogue through the early 1980s. Just how low the waist goes is up to you. There are jeans that start about an inch under the belly button or those that go really and truly low, starting right above the crotch.

Premium Jeans

These are the choicest of designer jeans. They have the trendiest cuts and are the most sought after labels in the US today. Most denim manufacturers release a premium line, but among the biggest hits are those from brands like True Religion.

Dark Wash Jeans

Designer jeans in really deep blue, sometimes verging on black, are selling like hot cakes these days. The dark color is very flattering to the body, making everyone look slimmer than he or she is.

Vintage Jeans

These designer jeans are painstakingly made to look old and weathered, especially on the thighs and behind. Some even go so far as to proudly sport holes and frayed edges.

Embellished Jeans

Now these indeed are attention grabbers! Embellishments could range from crystals and sequins to studs and embroidery. Though the over-the-top embellished look is out, a small amount of embellishment is still a popular trend.

Slim Jeans

Whether the jeans are straight or bootcut (flaring a bit from the ankles down to accommodate boots), the overall fit preferred is slim and sleek.

When it comes to designer jeans, labels like True Religion, L.A.M.B., Earnest Sewn and Antik are fast achieving iconic status. While True Religion has a long list of loyal celebrity clients like Hollywood Hunk Bruce Willis and supermodel Heidi Klum, rocker Gwen Stefani has made her distinctive sense of chic accessible to all through L.A.M.B.

Best Buys for Designer Jeans

Who among us doesn’t dream of adding some oomph to our wardrobes with a pair of hot designer jeans? Everyone wears jeans, but not all have a designer label that’ll make them stand out in a crowd.

Designer jeans are the crème de la crème of the denim world. Their cuts and fits are perfect and each shouts out its designer origin with a prominent logo either on a back pocket or the tiny coin pocket in front. With separate lines for men and women, designer jeans are made to fit a variety of sizes and body types. They are also special because of the meticulous attention to detail.

Let’s face it – designer jeans have snob value. Wearing a pair of designer jeans that fit like a second skin can make you feel on top of the world.

If you’ve been hunting for a store where you can find and compare a wide range of designer jeans, then you have finally arrived at the right place. Unica offers all the best designer jeans labels in the US under one roof. And to make things easier for you, we even take orders online.

9 Ways to Look Stunning in Designer Jeans

Jeans are a perennial favorite with women, never going out of style. But every now and then do you find yourself getting bored of the same old jeans-and-tee combination? What you need to do is shake things up so you still look and feel stunning in those faithful denims.

What you need first, of course, is a pair of the perfect designer jeans. Once that’s taken care of you can begin mixing and matching it with delightfully feminine and even slightly surprising accessories so that the look is always fresh. Here are nine tips to get you started.

Couple it with a Camisole

Nothing beats a camisole when it comes to looking sexy and feminine. Better still if the camisole is silky or satiny, soft to the touch and flattering to the figure. Longer camisoles with irregular hems would also work well. When you couple a camisole with a rugged pair of jeans, you have just the right mix of femme fatale and tomboy.

Top it with a Tunic

Wear a long-sleeve tunic over your designer jeans. Bright, ethnic and embellished tunics work best. Team it with an elaborate embroidered handbag and chunky ethnic accessories and you are ready to step out in style.

Layer it for the Look

Put a short and fitted top on over a longer, flowing blouse and you’ll be surprised how well it goes with your favorite jeans.

Blaze a Trail with a Blazer

It’s been done before, we know, but topping your jeans up with a blazer still works wonders and completely transforms the way you look. To keep it trendy, choose a blazer in a bright color. A short, fitted blazer works best.

Curl up the Cuffs

If you’re bored with your long jeans, just roll up the cuffs and the mirror will immediately reflect a new, more playful you. It’s a great way to show off your shapely calves, especially if you wear it with a pair of sexy heels. Or slip into a pair of boots if you want to unleash the cowgirl within.

Belt it Out

Putting on a flashy belt is perhaps the easiest way of giving your jeans a facelift. When worn low-slung over the hip, a belt subtly and cleverly draws the eye to your curves.

Black Magic

Like your jeans, the color black never goes out of style. What’s more, black always makes you look trim. So complement your jeans with a classic black top, strap on a pair of high-heeled sandals and you’re ready to paint the town red tonight.

Frills of Femininity

If you feel too much like a tomboy in your jeans, just slip into a blouse or tank top with frills and ruffles and you’ll instantly exude feminine mystique.

Surprise, surprise

Don’t know what to do with your large collection of scarves in summer? Think it’s time to throw away the ties your ex-boyfriend left behind? Put them to good use when you wear your jeans next by looping one of them around the waist instead of a belt. This unexpected little twist can work wonders if you have the confidence to carry it off.

Earnest Sewn to produce the denim for Cloak’s Fall 06 Line

New York based cult denim label, Earnest Sewn, will be producing the jeans for Cloak's Fall 06 line.  Designer Alexandre Blokhov met with Earnest Sewn's designer Scott Morrison in the denim label's concept store to discuss producing two men's jean that Cloak presented in their Fall 06 runway collection.  The jeans will be available in 3 high quality herringbone denims, and have Cloak's signature avant garde design aesthetic.  The jeans for Fall will be sold under the Cloak label, with Earnest Sewn overseeing technical design, marking/grading, sewing and laundry.

Earnest Sewn Announces their Men’s T-shirt program for Fall 06

Following the example set by our premium denim offering, Earnest Sewn is proud to announce the introduction of our men’s T-shirt program for Fall 06. The Earnest Sewn lifestyle revolves around New York City, our Americana past, and quality craftsmanship. The cult denim label has now added T-shirts to the selection of vintage inspired products that pay homage to a lifestyle that revolves around New York City, our Americana past, and quality craftsmanship. The authentically vintage inspired washed t’s are sewn from 100% pima cotton and inspired by Manhattan’s meatpacking district, home of the labels corporate headquarters and concept/lifestyle store.

The T-shirt graphic, ‘Bin No. 1’ is a reference to an underground speakeasy, common in the Meatpacking district during the prohibition era. ‘Old Kill road’ is the original name of Gansevoort street, a reference to the actual location of the Earnest sewn offices, and finally ‘Conkright & Sons’ was the Turpentine Distillery located in same building as Earnest Sewn’s concept/lifestyle store, ‘An Earnest Cut & Sew’ some 80-90 years ago.

These, along with other graphic and non-graphic t-shirts will be available in stores starting in July, 2006 and will retail for $62.

Company Background

Earnest Sewn, by definition, is a denim brand which pays homage to its Americana past and mixes, for perhaps the first time, traditional denim work wear with the ancient Japanese style aesthetic, Wabi Sabi. Designed and launched by the former co-founder/designer of paper Denim & Cloth, Scott Morrison, the Earnest Sewn design principle is literally translated as ’a product sewn in Earnest’.

Focusing on each individual jean and the numerous amounts of processing, hand application, and refinishing techniques used to create an Earnest Sewn jean, we take things even further by intentionally incorporating imperfection and inconsistency into key design and sewing details. This is exhibited in irregularities such as stitch detailing, needlework, sewing construction, trims, thread variations, and our ever changing ‘e & s’ back pocket decorative stitching.
